Health Benefits of Walking

Walking and Foot Care are the highlights for this month’s MediLodge Employee Whole Person Wellness Program.  These two interrelated topics are a very important part of wellness for the young and the old alike.  Walking provides a low-impact cardiovascular workout that helps fight stress, build strength and lose weight.  Here are some of the health benefits of walking.

Simply put, walking is one of the easiest and safest activities for burning calories, strengthening your body and lowering your risk of disease.   Foot care and proper planning play an important role in how successful you are with your walking program.   The following tips can help ensure success.

  • Always warm up and wear sturdy athletic shoes.
  • Take long smooth strides and walk as briskly as you can.
  • Breathe deep, but naturally, as you walk
  • Keep your head level and look straight ahead.
  • Swing your arms back and forth as you walk
  • Bend your elbows at a 90 degree angle and keep them close to your sides.
  • Let your heel strike the ground first, then roll from the heel to the ball of your foot.
  • Push off with the ball of your foot for more momentum.

Foot health and foot care are important parts to any exercise program.  Proper stretching before and after exercising is essential.

Take care of your feet, and they will take care of you.
