The MediLodge Group, a Michigan based company that has fifteen rehabilitation facilities throughout the state, held their Thirteenth Annual Senior Olympics on Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Armada Fairgrounds. Over three hundred fifty residents, staff, family and volunteers from Hillman to Monroe gathered together to celebrate and compete in six Olympic style events (kickball, horseshoes, target toss, discus, basketball and shotput).

All summer long the residents at the various MediLodge facilities practiced with the desire to make the traveling five-person Olympic team. Prior to the Senior Olympics, each facility held a special event to announce their Olympians and honor those that had participated in the trials. Some of the residents that were not selected for the traveling team attended the event as cheerleaders and coaches.

The weather was sunny and bright as the Olympians gathered for the Opening Ceremonies. Each facility’s Olympic team members were introduced to the sounds of clapping and cheering from the staff, family and friends that gathered in the pole barn at the Armada Fairgrounds. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all and the Star Spangled Banner was sung by Julia Loomis, staff member from MediLodge of St. Clair. The oldest resident, ninety-nine-year-old Olinda Gidley, from MediLodge of St. Clair, lit the Olympic torch and the Senior Olympics were officially started.

This year the executive chefs and dietary staff from the MediLodge centers prepared an excellent Midwestern BBQ that consisted of fresh fruit and berries, red skinned potato salad, coleslaw, deviled eggs, all beef hot dogs, BBQ breasts of chicken, a summer squash medley, corn on the cob, baked beans, fresh baked cookies and ice cream sundaes. A variety of juice and water was available all day for the crowd. Following the luncheon the officials inspected each of the six event’s venues, then the residents gathered and the games began.

All fifteen teams competed in the six events while the MediLodge Accounting Office Staff Cheerleaders led the cheers to motivate the Olympians. The score cards were tallied by members of the accounting office staff as well. The closing ceremony was held in the pavilion and the anticipation was infectious.

Dee Culp, Director of Operations, announced the winners according to rankings, as President Frank Wronski and Vice President Gail Clarkson presented each of the administrators with Olympic medallions. Finally the big announcement! This year the MediLodge Senior Olympic Loving Cup Trophy was presented to MediLodge of Howell.

The event culminated with God Bless America sung by MediLodge of Southfield staff member, Rene Hatt. The Olympic torch was blown out by MediLodge of Howell’s administrator Shelly Petoskey. All of the staff, family and residents were tired and happy as they got on the buses to return to their facilities but they all agreed to meet again next year in the hopes of winning the Olympic Loving Cup on the 14th anniversary of the event.
