MediLodge of Rochester Hills Celebrates National Senior Citizen’s Day

MediLodge of Rochester HillsThis year, National Senior Citizen’s Day arrived on Wednesday, August 21, with Americans everywhere honoring older members of society. Each year on August 21, people take time to appreciate any older person who is either at home, in their community, or within their family.

The holiday began in August of 1988 when President Ronald Reagan introduced National Senior Citizen’s Day as a means to change the way the elderly are regarded. Deemed an official holiday by Congress, National Senior Citizen’s Day celebrates the contributions of older adults in society, and provides an opportunity to acknowledge and promote awareness for their unique contributions.

“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute,” said Regan while discussing National Senior Citizen’s Day. “We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity,” the president added.

On National Senior Citizen’s Day, Americans are encouraged to help their elderly neighbors with a chore or volunteer at a senior center, all while showing gratitude for the older members of our society. There are many ways to celebrate on August 21, including simple behaviors to show an older person that you care. For instance, you could show your support for an older person with a positive attitude, invite an older family member over for dinner and offer meaningful ways for them to contribute.

The therapy staff  here at MediLodge of Rochester Hills are proud to be providing services that help our residents achieve and maintain the highest possible levels of independence. It is always extremely gratifying to us when someone reaches his her goals and is able to return home with loved ones, move on to a lesser care environment such as assisted living or group home, or is able to participate more fully in daily activities here at the facility. As far as we are concerned, every day is Senior Citizen Day!
