Transition Tips for Rehab Residents at MediLodge

MediLodge of Sterling HeightsMediLodge of Sterling Heights has put together some good suggestions to help ease the transition to a short or long-term stay at their facility.  They recognize that rehabilitation is an intensely personal experience and focus on each “Lodger” as an individual, both medically and emotionally.

Every Lodger receives a monthly activity calendar. Look at the calendar with your loved one and highlight the activities that they want to attend. Take your family member on a tour to find out how to get the activities and to places that he or she might enjoy such as the library, the Java Lodge, outdoor spaces and dining rooms. Ask the staff to remind the Lodger of the activities and times.

Introduce yourself and the Lodger to roommates and other Lodgers and family members. It’s a small world; many Lodgers discover common work histories, hometowns, and relatives. Making new friends helps Lodgers stay active and adjust quickly to their new home.

Attending the quarterly care conference is a good way to keep in touch with the care givers. Lodgers and their responsible party are strongly encouraged to attend these conferences and take an active role in their care planning.

If you are not from around here but do visit often, find out where local restaurants and parks are located. Lodgers love a change of scenery, so this information could be important to know!

Everyone loves to eat. Make sure that the staff is aware of the Lodger’s preferences as well as what food should be avoided. Depending on the Lodger’s cognition, you may need to assist in relaying his or her likes and dislikes. Many families bring in favorite foods from home or a restaurant. Make sure to label and date the leftovers if the Lodger doesn’t finish it in one setting. Ask the staff to store the container at the desk. Please limit the number of cookies or snacks at bedside and keep them in a closed container.

Lodgers spend a great deal of time in their rooms so why not make it as homey as possible. Personalize the room with a comforter from home, pictures of family, photo albums, television, clock, radio, and familiar items that remind them of home. Think about ordering a subscription to the local paper, it helps keep the Lodger attached to their community.

At MediLodge of Sterling Heights, restoring your health is our top priority.
