Thanksgiving Turkey Safety and Bonus Recipe!

by Dustin Marshall, Executive Chef, MediLodge of Montrose

Turkey Safety

MediLodge of MontroseYou can enjoy a traditional stuffed turkey this Thanksgiving as long as you follow these easy steps. Have a large enough workspace to prepare your bird. If you don’t have a cutting board big enough, use an unscented trash bag to put under your bird. Stuffing a bird is safe as long as you cook the stuffing to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F or greater. Remember that if you stuff your bird do not rely on the pop-up thermometer. That will only show that the breast meat has reached the correct temperature, not the entire bird. Finally, many people wash the turkey before baking. Washing the turkey is unsafe because it could potentially splash salmonella onto other surfaces. Baking the turkey to the correct temperature will kill any germs so please do not risk contamination by rinsing it. To always have a foolproof juicy turkey all you have to do is brine your bird a day ahead and you can cook it in a roasting bag for perfect results!

Here is a wonderful fall treat that is easy to make at home! If you prefer, you can substitute tea for the coffee.

Easy Halloween Party Ideas From MediLodge of Montrose

Halloween is celebrated by Americans of all ages.  We dress up in scary, funny or glitzy costumes to attend parties, parades, school events and trick or treating.  Traditional activities on Halloween, the second highest grossing commercial holiday, include haunted houses,  hayrides, bonfires as well as carving jack-o-laterns and decorating your home.

Some ways to step back from the commercial aspect of the holiday can be found on the internet and include many simple do-it-yourself projects and recipes.  Homemade costumes and treats are a good place to start.  Home decorations can also be made at home or school.

jackolaterns

MediLodge of Montrose Executive Chef Dustin Marshall has some fun and easy party ideas for families.

  • Dress up your veggie tray by using smaller finger-shaped carrots and cutting our a fingernail shaped red pepper and attaching it to the end with some cream cheese.
  • Create Worm Burgers by using vanilla wafers as the bun, one gummy worm and chocolate frosting to hold it all together.
  • My favorite is Caramel Spiders! Unwrap caramel squares, melt them on the stove and then cut licorice strings into 1½ inch pieces. Place the licorice as legs on a baking sheet and drop a quarter-sized circle of melted caramel on top. Add nuts to make a “bumpy” spider.
  • Give your buffet dishes scary and gross names.  Meatballs in BBQ sauce becomes “Gizzards in Wizard’s Blood.”
  • Pour pre-made snack mix into cups wrapped in gauze to make Mummy Cups with Bones.

Many MediLodge facilities will be offering community trick or treating on Halloween.  Check our Facebook page to find out when and where!

Rehab Graduates Appreciate Service at MediLodge of Montrose

MediLodge of Montrose

MediLodge of Montrose

Mabel W. came to MediLodge of Montrose to Recover, Rejuvenate, Revitalize and Return Home after a hospitalization at Genesys Health Park. She said that her family doctor recommended us because she was going to need more intense exercise and rehab than what she had been doing at home. Mabel had been to rehab centers that were closer to her home in Flint prior to coming to heal with us, but she decided to try something new. This was because she had heard so many good things about MediLodge and her doctor strongly recommended that she come here. He said that MediLodge was the closest thing to a 4 star hotel in the area! Here is what Mabel shared with us: “Just coming in to MediLodge, it doesn’t feel like you are coming into a hospital or a care unit or a ‘nursing home’. Everyone is upbeat and they go out of their way to make everyone comfortable and everything convenient for the lodger. They anticipate what you will need. When you get a bunch of people together, you can’t please everybody….but you seem to do it here. I don’t know how you do it! I think even my family feels differently about me being out here. After seeing MediLodge and how wonderful it is, they didn’t have anything to worry about. I absolutely feel stronger going out than when I came in. The therapy team pushes you to work hard. You see improvement and results after just a few days. We need more places like this!”

Here’s what some of our other former lodgers had to say about MediLodge of Montrose.

Thomas H. said that we were highly recommended by his doctor. He said that the food was out of this world. The doctors, nurses and therapy were outstanding. He would definitely recommend us.

Sonja Z. and George Z. had a neighbor recommend us. They said that the food was amazing and they really enjoyed the music and the Independence Day activities. They also said that the therapy was excellent and they loved all the therapists.

Sonja and George were “absolutely pleasantly surprised” and enjoyed their time at MediLodge of Montrose.

Shondell G. said that her son, who works at Genesys, recommended us. She said that she got great care. You could tell that the staff really cared. She was not anxious to leave therapy. She felt that the exercise made a big difference. She also said that she met a lot of interesting people and that the staff is all very friendly. Shondell also said that she loved the outdoor courtyards and her stay has been wonderful. She would highly recommend MediLodge to others.

Recovered … and Returning Home from MediLodge of Montrose

Nelson loved the dedication and care given by the staff at MediLodge of Montrose!

Nelson loved the dedication and care given by the staff at MediLodge of Montrose!

Nelson P. arrived at MediLodge of Montrose post-surgery and, according to him, he had no idea where he was, what was happening or why he was here. He describes being disoriented and his recollections of that time are hazy. He shares that around day 4 with us, he started to pull out of that state and slowly
began feeling better.
“In therapy, we have done a lot of physical things.” he shared. “I kept thinking to myself that I don’t need to do these things, my body isn’t worn out. But then after therapy, I was whipped. It turned out, to my surprise, that I wasn’t as fit as I thought”.
The therapy team has helped him make great strength gains and did a lot of teaching so that when he returns home he can continue working on his exercises until he feels that he is back in tip-top form. Nelson really enjoyed the dining service at MediLodge. “The food I have had here has been fabulous!”
He noted that the dining service was very prompt and quick to help him. “Someone is always there, always around. They fix any issue very quickly. If I dropped a fork in the dining room, someone was there to pick it up before I even had time to unlock the wheels on my chair.”
He also had a lot to say about the staff at MediLodge of Montrose. “The people that took care of me have been unbelievable. Nothing seems to phase them. There was always the feeling that they were here to serve me and they were happy to do so.”
He said that the employees were quick to take care of any need that he had.  He was surprised to find that there were people here that he knew. He expected that it would take some time to build social bridges but instead with the friendliness of the lodgers and staff, it happened much quicker. He said that both lodgers and staff are very open and warm. While being a lodger with us, Nelson also took on the role of encourager for new lodgers that had been admitted.
Nelson said “I’m not real excited about leaving tomorrow. Tina had the ability to just give and give and give. If only families could or would give to their family members what your staff gives to your lodgers.”
He had one last thought to share with any prospective lodger.  “If you really want to be rehabilitated, you have to come in with an open mind and open heart. Watch the staff and how much they care about you.  The therapy will be meaningful because they care and so you can succeed.”

MediLodge of Montrose Color Care Program

Color Care Program

During the month of February part of our Wellness Program will include a highlight of our Color Program.  Our program recognizes that there are four main ‘colors’ or personality types and also that while we all tend to present as one primary color, most often we have traits that are associated with all of the four colors.  Our Color Program sorts people into four basic colors: blue, gold, green, and orange.  Each of these colors have their own special traits.  The most important thing to know about the colors is that they each have traits that are positive and potentially negative, strengths and weaknesses.  By knowing your ‘color’, you can use that awareness to better interact with others.  Here is a basic overview, see if you recognize yourself or someone you know:

color care

Blues: trust their intuition and feelings, looking for meaning, hopeful, authentic, empathic, they are always searching for their real self, relationship-oriented, imaginative, tactful, eternal commitment to love, enthusiastic about ideas or causes, romantic, idealistic, optimist

Oranges: want to be seen as fun-loving, enjoys competition, tend to appear happy with a good sense of humor, enthusiastic, jokes, loves social situations, like to be active and doing things, lives in the moment, excited, optimistic, tests the limits, great in a crisis, cheerful, friendly, needs variety and doesn’t like repetition, finds joy in doing, “what you see is what you get”

During the month of February you may notice these special colors showing up in our dress, know that it means we are showcasing that particular color that week.  We also use the color program to best meet the needs of our lodgers.  Please feel free to ask a Color Ambassador for more information about our Color Program!

February Wellness Also Showcases Positive Affirmation Month.

We will be having activities that allow us to share positive things about each other this month.  Look for the hearts on the wall of the Game Lodge!
